Gujarat Squad Analysis: Indian T20 League 2022
Like the Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat too will be making their Indian T20 League debut this season. Ahead of the auction, the new franchise managed to buy marquee players in the form of Hardik Pandya, who will also captain the side. Along with the Indian all-rounder, Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill too were roped in.
At the auction too, Gujarat were successful in adding some big names to their roster. The Ahmedabad-based franchise will open their campaign against Lucknow at the Wankhede Stadium on 28 March.
The onus of laying the foundation at the top will be on Gill. Last year, he scored 478 runs at 28.11 for Kolkata. Given Gujarat’s brittle batting line-up, Gill will have to produce better numbers in 2022.
Gujarat will be delighted to have the services of arguably the best white-ball spinner in the world. Over the years, Rashid has been singlehandedly winning games for Hyderabad. Looking ahead into the new season, his new franchise will hope for more of the same.
It remains to be seen in what capacity Hardik turns out for Gujarat. While the franchise would want him to bowl his quota of 3 to 4 overs and bat in the middle-order, his fitness could be a concern.
Mohammad Shami will lead the pace attack for Gujarat. In 2021, he was the leading wicket-taker (19) for Punjab.
Noor Ahmad, who was a part of the Australian T20 League, will now feature in the cash-rich event. The Afghanistan spinner is known to spin the ball both ways. It will be interesting to see if he gets the opportunity to bowl in tandem with his countryman Rashid.
After warming the Chennai bench for almost three years, Sai Kishore could get a well-deserved breakthrough going forward. The Tamil Nadu cricketer was one of the star performers (10 wickets) in the Indian domestic T20 tournament.
After splurging money on the bowlers at the auction, Gujarat have managed to construct a potent bowling attack, with match-winning Indian and overseas professionals. The acquisition of Rashid also meant that the spin department would be led by the Afghanistan leggie.
The pace bowling too appears to be in the safe hands of Shami and Lockie Ferguson. While the Indian seamer should take the new ball, it remains to be seen how and when the Kiwi pacer will operate.
The inclusion of Rahul Tewatia, Alzarri Joseph, Noor Ahmed, and Jayant Yadav will also add depth and variety to the Gujarat attack.
Not having batters of great repute in the top-order could become a big problem area for Gujarat. Jason Roy’s withdrawal from the tournament has only made matters worse for the debutants.
Barring Gill, not many batters in the Gujarat camp have great Indian T20 League credentials. While Matthew Wade has the ability to cut loose, he can’t be relied upon to provide quick starts every time.
Vijay Shankar at No.3 doesn’t exude confidence either. In all his previous stints with Hyderabad, he has failed to impress.
Then there is Miller, who has played a few blinders in his career. That said, his inconsistency can be infuriating for the management.
As the tournament progresses, the pitches in Mumbai and Pune will also get slower. It’s difficult to see the Gujarat middle-order creating any positive impression for longer periods.
There is an air of expectation around Hardik. In fact, there is curiosity amongst the cricketing fraternity on whether or not the Gujarat skipper will finally get back to bowling. If he does, then the Ahmedabad-based side will have a semblance of balance to their squad. Although Gujarat’s bowling might keep fans interested for a while, their batting might prevent them from making the final cut.
