Lucknow Super Giants Squad Analysis: Indian T20 League 2022

By Vivek Krishnan

As India’s biggest T20 carnival begins, all eyes will be on the new Indian T20 League entrants Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). They will begin their 2022 campaign against the fellow newcomers Gujarat on March 28 in Mumbai.

The newly formed Lucknow side will be captained by KL Rahul. At the recently concluded auction, LSG was also successful in absorbing several marquee cricketers.

Game Changers
Lucknow will strongly pin their hopes on skipper KL Rahul to flourish with the bat. Since the beginning of 2018, he has amassed 2548 runs at 56.62, including 25 half-centuries and 2 centuries in the Indian T20 League. Although Rahul was forced to play the anchor role for Punjab in his previous stint, he could go all guns blazing in 2022 given Lucknow’s depth in the batting department.
Quinton de Kock’s dual role of batting and wicketkeeping will further help Lucknow with their balance. Furthermore, given his retirement from Test cricket, the South African will be available for the entire tournament.

Key Contributors
The addition of Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis will not only lend balance to the Super Giants, but their ability to adjust and change their approach depending on the game situation also augurs well for Lucknow.
Much of Lucknow’s success will depend on how strike bowlers Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan fare. While Bishnoi was the Emerging Player of the Tournament in 2020, Avesh carried the burden of the Delhi attack, alongside Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje last year. Avesh’s death bowling in the previous edition also earned him rich praises from various quarters.

Along with the inclusion of KL Rahul, the Lucknow thinktank also managed to buy Quinton de Kock at the auction. In the previous years, the South African wicketkeeper-batter proved to be a vital cog in Mumbai’s wheel. With KL Rahul and de Kock opening the innings, Lucknow should be able to get the required impetus at the top.

The middle- and lower-order too appears healthy, with all-rounders galore. While the likes of Krunal Pandya, Marcus Stoinis, and Jason Holder can take care of the finishing touches, the responsibility of building the innings will be on Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda.

Perhaps, Lucknow’s greatest strength lies in the flexibility of their batting order. Depending on the situation, certain players are capable of switching positions without any discomfort. Additionally, the depth in the batting will also encourage their batters to express themselves.

Although Lucknow have multiple options, on the spin and seam fronts, they might struggle to find a company for Avesh Khan in the final overs. While Jason Holder and Dushmantha Chameera can be asked to operate at the death, they haven’t been very impressive in that aspect for their respective countries.
Manish Pandey’s recent strike rate at No.3might bother LSG. The Indian batter struggled to get runs quickly in his previous two outings for Hyderabad. If Pandey could rewind to his early days in the tournament, Lucknow will be well served. The presence of Gautam Gambhir in the dugout could have a positive influence on Pandey. Remember the Kolkata days?

Final Word
For starters, the Lucknow management has done a commendable job in compiling a formidable team with no apparent holes. Fielding their XI for the initial games too shouldn’t be a matter of concern for them. Although LSG will be making their debut in the Indian T20 League, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if they manage to qualify for the playoffs.
