Delhi’s Schedule for Indian T20 League 2023
Squad Analysis of Delhi
Despite a not so impressive performance from the team in the last edition of the tournament, the management didn’t go for wholesale changes and released only five players ahead of the mini-auction and bought five players on the day of the auction. Among those bought were England’s Phil Salt, South Africa’s Rillee Roussouw and Indian veterans Ishant Sharma and Manish Sharma. They shelled the most money for Mukesh Kumar who has been impressive for India A in the recent past.
While the team will miss the explosive batting of Rishabh Pant, the batting looks explosive with David Warner and Prithvi Shaw headlining it and the middle order flexing names like Mitchell Marsh, Rovman Powell and Rillee Roussow. The franchise also added the experienced Manish Pandey to their armory and if Sarfaraz Khan can recover in time, Delhi’s lineup can be one of the most explosive, especially with in-form Axar Patel present in the lower middle order.
Strengths – The batting order reeks of strength and power and is perfectly suited to the slam-bang format. The explosiveness of the lineup would allow captain Warner to take up an anchor-like role and that could mean a season full of runs from the veteran Aussie’s bat. While Rishabh Pant’s batting will be sorely missed, to have Warner at the helm is not a bad news at all for Delhi fans and not only will greater responsibility bring a good leader out of the tactically astute Australian but also more runs from his bat. Moreover, in Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw, Delhi has two batters who have largely remained ignored by the national team selectors. This could prove to be advantageous to Delhi as both the youngsters will play with a point to prove. Another man with a point to prove and a lot more experience under his belt will be Manish Pandey and he has the ability to provide solidity to the middle-order in case the team stutters at the beginning. The batting form of Axar Patel in India’s series against Australia has shown that he’s no longer a bowling all-rounder and he could be an asset for Delhi in this Indian T20 League.
Weaknesses – The one trouble Delhi could face is finding the right balance in their batting as they have too many explosive batters to choose from, both foreign and home-grown. The management would need to be patient if the first few matches don’t get them the desired results. Moreover, while Nortje will be the leader of the pace attack, it would be interesting to see which Indian pacers support him. Also, with David Warner assuming captaincy duties and Nortje being a first XI choice on the basis of his reputation and performance, Delhi would find it difficult to choose from the foreign big-hitters they have and it could mean the likes of Phil Salt and Rillee Roussouw going unutilized.
Delhi Team in Indian T20 League 2023
The story of Delhi is one of the most fascinating in the Indian T20 League’s short history. They began as a powerhouse with some of the most explosive seasons and had the smoothest rides to the knockout stages in the first two seasons. However, they failed to make the most of that chance and for a long time struggled to finish in the top four. From 2014 to 2018, they couldn’t go beyond the sixth position, finishing with the wooden spoon twice in that period. A change in ownership in 2018 not only brought a new name for the team but also brought a change in the team’s fortunes. Since their rebranding, the team has made it to the playoffs three consecutive times and even went a step closer to the trophy in 2020. However, the trophy has still proved elusive and they will begin their 16th season of Indian T20 League this year in search of their first ever title.
The team looked a different unit post the 2022 mega auction and couldn’t make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Worse was to follow as captain Rishabh Pant met an unfortunate accident in December last year that ruled him out of the tournament. There remains some doubts over the availability of star pacer Anrich Nortje as well as in-form batter Sarfaraz Khan as well. All those troubles mean that the challenge ahead of new skipper David Warner Is a huge one. However, Warner has a lot of experience as a leader in Indian T20 League and the Delhi management will look forward to him to replicate the success he enjoyed with Hyderabad in the past.
The coaching staff, which already had big names like Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson, will also see Sourav Ganguly return as Director of Cricket, a position he had to give up when he took up the job of BCCI President. With such a star-studded team working behind the scenes, Delhi would be hoping that their regular captain’s absence is not felt.
