Scotland T20 Squad S.W.O.T Analysis

Strengths – Scotland will be turning up for this T20 World Cup with pretty much the same side that played in the last year’s tournament. That means most of the players will have the experience of playing in a World Cup before. That experience should come in handy when they begin their campaign in Australia. Moreover, Scotland’s performance in the 50-over World Cup when it was held in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 was decent and the team should take confidence from that effort.

Weaknesses – Scotland’s numbers against the big teams make for a terrible reading. They have been defeated by almost everyone in the recent past. It will be very difficult for them to come good in Australia, where they have never played before, that too with very little match practice between the two World Cups.

Opportunities – As a team that most would label as the whipping boys of the tournament, Scotland go into the tournament with very little expectations. That could also translate into playing without any pressure, which in return can get some memorable performances out of the Scottish players.

Threats – While most of these players were part of the team in the last World Cup, the vastly different conditions of Australia from that of UAE and Oman would definitely challenge them. The conditions along with the lack of cricket that they have played in the past one year could prove to be a double whammy for them.

Scotland Team’s Performance in T20 World Cup

Scotland made their first appearance on the world stage in the 1999 World Cup and have appeared in two more 50-over World Cups since then. They were also one of the teams that played in the inaugural T20 World Cup. Apart from that, they also played in the 2009 and 2016 editions of the T20 World Cup. The last major tournament that the Scottish team took part in was the 2021 T20 World Cup.

They have played a total of 16 matches in the T20 World Cup but haven’t enjoyed much success. Their wins before the last T20 World Cup have come against Oman, Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong. However, they managed a bigger win in 2021 which came against Bangladesh. That win helped them to secure a place in the Super 12s. The performance in the Super 12s was neither decent nor surprising. They faced a heavy defeat against Afghanistan and even lost to Namibia. They did put up a decent performance against New Zealand but were emphatically defeated by India and Pakistan. Scotland didn’t play any T20I post till the end of July when New Zealand visited them. That would mean that once again, the team would enter the tournament without any great practice and that would hurt their chances to put on a good show.

On account of reaching the Super 12s in the 2021 World Cup, Scotland have made it to the 2022 T20 World Cup. They will need to manage a few wins in the first round this time around if they’re to repeat the feat in Australia. They will be up against Ireland and West Indies along with one more team that would join these three from the qualifiers. Only two teams from the group would progress and for Scotland to finish in top 2, they would need to play out of their skins.
