Strengths – England’s batting lineup is almost scary with one power hitter following another. Moreover, Jos Buttler’s presence at the top of the order would give England a psychological edge over the opposition teams as he has emerged as the most consistent T20 batsman over the last couple of years. He was in supreme touch in the Indian T20 League and followed that up with more runs for England in white ball cricket. His ability to play long innings at higher strike-rates makes him a special talent.
Weaknesses – The presence of multiple power-hitters in the batting lineup can often result in England going too hard and faltering in the process. England have benefited greatly from their approach of go big or go home in white ball cricket in the recent past but the outstanding displays of hitting are also punctuated by several low-scores because of batting collapses. Since the nature of the format is such that every defeat can hurt, England can’t afford to slip up owing to their bang-bang approach.
Opportunities – On Australian pitches, the ball comes on to the bat and that’s what all the top-order English batsmen enjoy. The likes of Roy, Bairstow, Buttler and Livingstone can hit sixes with ease on even the big Australian grounds, something that not every team in the tournament can boast of. We might be in for multiple power-packed performances by this lineup once the tournament gets underway.
Threats – In the last two tournaments, England have been extremely impressive and looked the team to beat before they misfired in a knockout performance. The team would need to be cautious against a similar outcome this time around and would need to up their game in the knockout stages.
England Team’s Performance in T20 World Cup
The country which gave us the game of cricket and houses the Home of Cricket had for the longest time failed to open their account when it came to winning ICC tournaments. For long, it remained a go-to taunt for the opposition team’s fans. In the far-flung islands of the Caribbean Sea, however, it all changed in 2010 when they defeated traditional enemies Australia to lift the T20 World Cup under the leadership of Paul Collingwood. Until 2019, when Eoin Morgan’s men lifted the 50 over World Cup at home, that was England’s biggest achievement in white ball cricket.
In the subsequent years, England went on to transform its white ball cricket emphatically and reaped its rewards too. They came very close to winning the 2016 World T20 before Braithwaite played a miraculous cameo to snatch a win for West Indies from the jaws of defeat in the final. Five years later too, England played the same brand of cricket to emerge the favorites in the 2021 T20 World Cup but got knocked out by New Zealand in the semi-final. A year later, England look even more dangerous and would enter the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup as firm favorites. Jos Buttler’s team is made up of several T20 stars and the conditions in Australia should favor England’s style of playing too.
Placed in Group 1 for the Super 12s, England will be fighting against New Zealand, Australia and Afghanistan to book a place in the semi-finals. In the 2021 T20 World Cup too, they had Australia in their group who they brushed aside easily. However, New Zealand went on to knock them out in the semi-final before losing tamely to Australia in the final of the tournament. These four teams will also be joined by two more teams from the Qualifiers in their group.

- England holds the record of the highest score chased down in a World T20 match. In the 2016 edition, they chased down 230 in reply to South Africa’s 229 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
- In the 2021 T20 World Cup, Jos Buttler’s century made him the second Englishman to have a World Cup century against his name. In 2014, Alex Hales had scored a century too. Coincidentally, both Hales and Buttler struck tons against Sri Lanka only.
- Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler hold the record for the highest 2nd wicket partnership in T20Is as they put on an unbeaten 167 against South Africa in 2020.
- England also have the dubious record of conceding the fastest century and the fastest half-century in the tournament’s history. Chris Gayle reached the triple-figure mark against them in 48 balls in 2016 while Yuvraj Singh reached his half-century in 12 balls in the inaugural World Cup in the same match where he hit Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over.
